The Student Government Association has reached a compromise on its stance regarding the possible implementation of Turnitin. At its meeting last Tuesday, SGA decided on two resolutions related to the anti-plagiarism program. Debate over Turnitin centered on whether professors and administrators would use it for its true purpose.
Today, Students in Free Enterprise are hosting a free seminar, Financial Manage-ment 101. SIFE is a student run organization that creates projects around five criteria: entrepreneurship, financial literacy, success skills, market economics and ethics. "Students in SIFE get benefits by practicing concepts they learn in class before they get out into the real world," said Laura Zirfas, SIFE graduate assistant and MBA major.
The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will hold a blood drive on campus this week, according to Patty Morris of the CBCO recruitment team. The blood drive, which is held today through Thursday, will be located in the Ballroom Left on the third floor of Plaster Student Union.
The opening ceremony to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month was held on Friday. Besides all festivities, the ceremony offered students and the community a close-up look at the Hispanic culture. On the ceiling of the grand ballroom in the Plaster Student Union hung flags of the Latin American countries from around the world.
Chalked messages promoting student organizations and events are often seen underfoot on campus sidewalks, and organizations that write such messages are required to follow specific rules. "At the beginning of each academic year, we send out a reminder to student organizations about the sidewalk chalking policy," said Thomas Lane, assistant dean of students.
Friday, the Missouri State University Board of Gov-ernors held their monthly meeting away from home. The members met in Kansas City, Mo., just minutes away from downtown. During the two-hour long meeting, members and active participants discussed many issues that pertain to the Missouri State campus.
Missouri State University has instituted a new pay system for faculty that will decide their salary based on how well they do their job and the contributions they make to the university. Until the new system was introduced last January Missouri State used an across the board pay increase.
Computers on the Missouri State campus ran a little slower than usual last week when certain versions of Symantec Antivirus allowed a virus to affect the campus. "This outbreak was limited to about 200 computers, mainly in classrooms and departmental computer labs that don't see a lot of regular," Kevin Piercy, coordinator of user support of computer services said.
Luca de Alfaro, of the University of California at Santa Cruz, has developed new software that will make Wikipedia, a popular open-edit online encyclopedia, more credible. The new software uses an array of shades of the color orange to depict what context is credible.
The committee overseeing the building process of the new University Recreational Center had their first meeting Sept. 6. The Missouri State recreational center steering committee re-viewed the recent student surveys that were taken in the past month. "We conducted this to confirm that we are indeed putting the right things into this facility," said Andrew Garton, Student Government Association director of administrative and information services and senior socio-political communications major.
