Limewire use on campus leads to copyright issues

Students using Limewire might have recently had their Internet ports shut off for an extended period of time because of copyright complaints. The Recording Industry Association of America recently filed copyright complaints against students across the campus, ResNET administrator Justin Wilbers said.

Some studies say text language to blame for poor student writing

A recently popular discussion has been on texting and other informal communications and their effect. Numerous studies are linking errors in academic writing to these means of communication. Informal writing has seeped into Missouri State, but is it really an issue? Lanette Cadle, an assistant professor in English, said in her time at Missouri State, she has seen a lot of errors, but the level of errors has not been especially high lately.

MSU study questions feelings about guns on campus

A Missouri State professor in the sociology, anthropology and criminology department conducted a survey of how students felt about the option of carrying concealed weapons on campus. The survey, administered by Gary Brinker during the month of April, covered different aspects of what a policy like this might entail.

A high-ranking Missouri State University administrator was named as a finalist for Springfield's city manager position Wednesday. Greg Burris, vice president for administrative and information services, is one of three finalists for the position. The winner should be named Aug.

MSU names new CFO

Missouri State University promoted from within to fill the chief financial officer position. Nila Hayes, who has worked in financial services at Missouri State for 30 years, replaces Kent Kay, who had been with the universty since 2003. Kay left to take a position at National-Louis University in Chicago.

Obama focuses on economy during Springfield stop

Sen. Barack Obama said he has a plan to provide economic relief for Missourians, in an address to a crowd of 2,000 at Glendale High School this morning. "I am absolutely confident that we can choose our own economic destiny," Sen. Obama said. Obama addressed the economic concerns of the nation regarding high fuel prices, the loss of more than 468,000 jobs and an increase in home foreclosures.

Fire department finds no fire

The fire department arrived at Blair-Shannon House as students evacuated Friday. After smoke had been detected from the fifth floor trash room, MSU?public safety was alerted via the residence hall's Silent Night system, a system which is installed within each of the residence halls.

Mold in Craig concerns students

A group of students were given the task at the beginning of the semester to go out and promote a project that would raise social awareness about an issue that they were passionate about. "Many of the theater students had been worried about the mold on the ceiling of Craig for a long time and have wanted something to be done about it," said Lauren Janoski, a theater performance major.
