While I am frequently humored at the absurdity I read weekly in Mr. Garretson's column, I must congratulate him on really outdoing himself in his latest article concerning the Supreme Court. I understand Mr. Garretson has very strong opinions, and has every right to them, but I also find his columns filled with ignorance and bigotry.
Watching Jon Stewart take on Bill O'Reilly this week was almost as fun as watching Barack Obama mop the floor with every position the Right had during the House Republicans Picnic. Or, whatever they call it. It was a beautiful thing - at one point, O'Reilly, not dominating the conversation to his liking, exploded, shouting and waving his arms around as if he were about to throttle the impish liberal commentator.
Last summer, while speaking to the National Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C., President Obama stated "The Apollo program produced technologies that have improved kidney dialysis and water purification systems, energy-saving building materials and fire-resistant fabrics used by firefighters and soldiers.
One quick read of Department of Higher Education Commissioner Robert Stein's letter to presidents and chancellors of state universities would probably leave most people with a sense of impending doom. Read it twice, and it seems a little over the top. Some of the key words were in that bulleted list of cost saving ideas: all athletic programs could be eliminated.
