The program is funded by SIFE and by donations from local retailers who donate the "goods" that are sold at the mock city's store, SIFE-Mart. The mock store employees then must price the goods, and Gumerman said the younger students often learn the lessons of supply and demand fast.
"In the SIFE-Mart, they were having problems selling some items and others were just flying off the shelves, and they realized they could boost a price so it wouldn't go as fast, and they can lower this price and it will sell," she said.
"It was just really neat to see that they could figure that out on their own."
SIFE adviser and business professor Jim Scott said other SIFE projects include a Personal Financial Planning Contest in the spring and Project Senior Surfers, when SIFE members teach senior citizens computer skills. SIFE will also host a spring activity that will bring elementary school students to campus to teach the functions and features of SMS as a business operation.
Gumerman said the SIFE team is always looking for more members of any major, and interested students can join at any time. Meetings are held every other Tuesday.
