"At night, we have students come in and they'll just open their books and sit at the bar and read," she said. "We also have groups of students who will come in and do it together."
Although an oxygen bar in a tanning salon may sound odd, the oxygen actually goes hand-in-hand with getting the summer look.
"Once the higher concentration of oxygen gets into the bloodstream, it increases the production of melanin in your skin, and using it prior to tanning gives you a 20 to 30 percent deeper tan," Angye Sawyer said.
The oxygen used by Downtown Tans is two liters per minute for recreation use only, Sawyer said. Medical grade is five to 10 liters.
The oxygen bar begins at five minutes for $3, 10 minutes for $5, 15 minutes for $7 and 20 minutes for $9.
Tanning packages vary in price depending on the level of bed used. A Level 1 bed has a facial and shoulder tanner, Level 2 has a high-pressure facial, both being 20-minute beds. Level 3 is an 18-minute bed with three high-pressure facials, Level 4 is a 15-minute bed and Level 5 is a 12-minute bed, both with four high-pressure facials. Level 5 will soon have surround-sound and an MP3 player hookup.
There is also an option for air brush tans, which is a spray on tan that lasts five to seven days, Angye Sawyer said.
A monthly electronic funds transfer (the Monthly EFT package) is a no-contract package that offers unlimited tanning, free eyewear, 50 percent off upgrades and a free five-minute oxygen session with each tan. These packages vary from Level 1 for $20 to Level 5 for $125 a month.
"It's been fun so far," Angye Sawyer said. "I didn't know how we would be received, but it's turning out great."

I thought this debate was about them, as opposed to featuring them. Whoops.
