Next year, a portion of student service fees will be used to pay for the construction of JQH Arena.
President Michael Nietzel said he has decided to reallocate $104,180 from the Student Computer Usage Fee, or SCUF, to be used for JQH Arena and Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.
This use of universtiy funds marks a change in the university's position on where funding for the $67 million arena might come from.
In an interview with The Standard in January of this year, Nietzel said, "We are not spending any university money on JQH."
On Feb. 11, 2006, Nietzel was quoted by the Springfield News-Leader: "We plan to use a combination of private gifts, suite monies, revenue from seat assessments, additional season ticket sales, and other sources to pay the debt service.
I expect this project to attract not only a lot of attention, but also a lot of support."
Nietzel was quoted in the News-Leader on March 8, 2006, "We will support this through revenue. We have not asked the state for support and have not asked for general revenue from the university," said MSU President Mike Nietzel. "The whole thing is based on revenue that will flow from activities in the arena and gifts for the arena."
The minutes of an Oct. 27, 2006, Board of Governors meeting say that board President Michael Franks said, "It is important that everyone understand that these bonds are to be paid from auxiliary fund revenues and not from any of the education and general revenue streams (state appropriations and student fees)."
On Thursday, Nietzel was asked about the use of student service fee money to help pay for JQH Arena.
"I don't want students to pay more or charge students for JQH," he said, "but I also am not going to let money just sit in a technology fund when we frankly haven't used it every year. When there are needs, JQH is a very small one. If you look at asking students to take an existing fee and apply two and a half bucks a semester towards it, I don't think that's a real big deal," Nietzel said.
