For students who want to participate in the Missouri State's annual Relay for Life, the chance is still open.

Many students and faculty at Missouri State have already taken the plunge to fight back against cancer, but there is still a need for more teams, according to Alyson Mays, team development co-chair and a senior marketing major.

Mays said that 116 teams have already registered online, but there are about 25 more teams who have expressed interest.

"Our goal is 150 teams so we only need a few more," Mays said.

The American Cancer Society sponsors Relay for Life. Teams camp overnight at their event location while taking turns walking or running around a track or path. Prior to the event, many teams raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Many teams have already started fundraising for the relay. Kyle is a team captain for the Department of Communications, and said that she has already planned her team's fundraiser.

Her team's fundraiser, taking place Sunday, will collaborate with businesses in Springfield. Kyle said they rented out Ozark Mountain Gymnastics, near the corner of Battlefield Road and Fort Avenue.

The Communication Department host an open gym from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. for Missouri State faculty and students to bring their children, they will charge $5 admission, and this will go towards Relay For Life.

Mays said there is still time to register. Just go to www.msurelay.org, and in the top right corner, click how you wish to join. There is a $10 joining fee, so if applying online, have a credit card ready.

The relay will take place at Plaster Stadium from 7 p.m. April 18 to 7 a.m. April 19.

Mays said there will be various entertainment during the relay including A Cub Bella and the Beartones, the Skinny Improv, four bands, three solo acts and an ICON drum show. There will also be games and activities throughout the night.

Jerri Kyle, an instructor for the Department of Communication, said each team must consist of eight to 15 members. With that range, Mays said there is no set amount for each team to donate, but each team member must raise a minimum of $100 to receive a participant T-shirt.

The relay is mainly a student run function, only requiring some faculty help, including Kyle's.
