Letter: Story disrespected two MSU students
Issue date: 9/11/08 Section: Opinion
This is in response to the article of the two MSU students who died in a car accident. I feel this article was poorly written and very disrespectful to the two students, family and friends of these students. These two students died over the weekend and the first thing the article points out is that there is suspicion of alcohol being involved. Whether or not this is true, it should not have been the very first sentence of the article, these boys lost their lives, which should have been first. Pointing out the suspicions about alcohol in the first sentence alters people's attitude about the rest of the article. Did the author even think to consider what the family and friends of these two would think if they read this. It makes it seem like the deaths of these students is minimal compared to the fact that they might have been drinking. I am not saying that it should not have been mentioned I just think it could have been done in a more tasteful and respectable way. Drinking and driving is no joke, and should be taken seriously, but two students were killed, how and any factors leading up to their death should be supplemental information and not the main point. This article also tells its reader nothing about these two boys other than their majors and hometown. The author could have included some activities the boys were involved in or any other information about them. I also feel it would have been nice to have a picture of each of the boys; it would've been the least The Standard could do.
