Letter: Bears For Life shouldn't have been surprised
Issue date: 10/9/08 Section: Opinion
Last Wednesday, the Bears For Life, a Pro-Life organization here on campus, erected a macabre little cemetery out of popsicle sticks on the lawn of Blair-Shannon. They surrounded it with false statistics on signs strapped to lightpoles. It was a disgusting attempt to guilt and scare people away from abortions. As is demonstrable by the false statistic on their sign pictured in the last issue of The Standard, the Bears For Life are liars, and their actions are both stupid and morally reprehensible.
The night after their protest, people ran around kicking their popsicle crosses over and correcting their blatantly false signs.
Surprisingly, this was just what the Bears For Life wanted to happen. They were lurking around the whole night with a camera phone, trying to catch people messing with their stuff. As soon as a few outraged and offended kids took the bait, they ran around complaining to every media source they could find with their unviewably dark camera phone videos. You can find them on YouTube, if you want. Sadly, it made the front page of the last edition of The Standard.
I decided to do a bit of research. As it turns out, the Bears For Life only had the Blair-Shannon lawn reserved until 10 p.m. on Wednesday night. So, if I understand correctly, that means that all of their unattended, weird little cemetery lies were considered trash after 10 p.m. I suggest that if the Bears For Life don't want their garbage Godzilla'd and corrected, they shouldn't leave it lying around.
So here's the moral of the story, kids: next time, don't mess with their stuff; report it to Groundskeeping, and see if they'll fine them for littering.

Disgusted by FSM

Despite some of the perpetrators admitting to supporting FSM and being recognized from the pro-abortion protest led by FSM, FSM denies that any of its members were involved in the vandalism. (Continued…)

Disgusted,
You should be ashamed of yourself. You have no evidence to arrive at the conclusion that FSM members were involved, when that display was left out for the whole campus to gander at overnight, yet you are ready to assign blame just because you feel that they were. (Continued…)

Regardless of who is responsible for destroying the "graveyard", can't we all agree that the vandalism was still a sign of intolerance and disrespect. (Continued…)

i just thought i'd give another quick thought on the abortion issue. we can make all the rationalizations we want but when it comes down to it, abortion is (with a few rare exception, ie rape and sometimes incest) just a device to evade responsibilities from ones actions. (Continued…)

As it stands, my personal opinion is that their display should not have been vandalized. Not only was it a petty action, it has given the BFL an opportunity to take the conversation away from the pros and cons of abortion and move it to their own martyrdom. (Continued…)

I seem to remember you drawing, what was it, 5000 chalked outlines of dead bodies all over campus? What is so remarkably different about 3000 neatly compacted popsicle sticks that gets you so riled up, Ryan? I'm sure you and I can both agree that unnecessary death is a terrible thing, but what I don't get is why you throw such a fuss over 5000 dead VOLUNTEERS. (Continued…)

Because there wasn't a completely different message about those troops and the cause in which they were fighting that wasn't posted around campus on nice sheets of paper explaining why they were drawn. (Continued…)

If you support or are against BFL does not matter.
Censoring an event is deplorable.
It does not matter if FSM were involved, it appears that the group did not sanction any destruction against the event. (Continued…)

I can't believe I'm siding with J.T and Ryan on this issue, but the "grave site" was in bad taste but probably shouldn't have been destroyed. Saying that however, please allow me to call the BFL a waaaambulance. (Continued…)
