The Missouri State Ice Bears played the Robert Morris-Chicago Eagles on Friday at home, coming off of two huge wins against an inferior team.
The Eagles were much better than the Panthers of last week, but the Ice Bears still won the game 3-2 in overtime thanks to the golden hockey stick of Danny Bethmann.
It started out really well for the Ice Bears. They scored two unanswered goals in the first period, one from Danny Bethmann and the other from Paul Moellenberg.
Everything was looking good until the second period, when the Ice Bears gave up two goals.
"I think we played well in the first period," head coach Mike Schroeder said. "I think we were phenomenal in the third period, but we just broke down in the second."
Defensive errors burnt the Ice Bears in the second period.
"We just had a breakdown on defense," goalkeeper Mike Poepping said. "They had us running around and we got an unlucky bounce. They just caught us out of position and they capitalized."
Both teams' defenses were able to keep each other form scoring in the third period, though the game began to get very physical.
"We knew going in that they were going to be physical," Danny Bethman said. "we just needed to go out there and beat them every period and with the exception of the first half of the second period, I think we did."
With the game tied at two, it came down to a five-minute, sudden-death period. Bethman came through.
"I got the puck away from the net," Bethman said. "I kept waiting for the defenseman to steer away from the goal so I could get a clear pass. He just took too long so I shot and I scored."
"Danny is the biggest guy on the team and we have been trying to get him to move in on the net instead of trying to snipe it," assistant coach Mike Brown said. "When everyone ran out on the ice, I turned to coach Schroeder and I said 'now that he's done that, we are never going to convince him not to snipe."
