Missouri State's one-two punch at running back proved too much for the visiting Youngstown State Penguins Saturday afternoon, as the Bears won their homecoming game 42-28.
Sophomores Kingjack Washington and Stephen Johnston combined for 227 rushing yards and three touchdowns to help the Bears improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Johnston showed no signs of his lingering hamstring injury as he had 87 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Washington tallied 140 yards and one score on 23 caries.
"They were great today," Bears coach Terry Allen said. "They compliment each other so well."
It was just Missouri State's second victory ever against Youngstown State (2-5, 1-2). The Bears still trail the all-time series 2-11, but got their first victory over the Penguins since 2004.
Tied 14-14 at halftime, Missouri State scored twice in the third quarter to make it 28-14. Johnston cut through the Youngstown State defense for a 38-yard touchdown and Kirby added his second touchdown run of the day at the 8:16 mark of the third quarter.
On Youngstown State's next drive, running back Jabari Scott capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive with his second touchdown of the day to get the Penguins with 28-21.
But the Bears took control from there, getting a 12-yard touchdown pass from Kirby to senior tight end Jeff Sargent before Washington added an 8-yard score with four minutes left in the game to make it 42-21.
Scott caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dailyn Campbell with two minutes remaining to get Youngstown State within 42-28. The Penguins even recovered the following onside kick, but Bears senior linebacker Jeremy Dawson intercepted Campbell to seal the win.
Missouri State led 14-0 early on 1-yard touchdown runs by Johnston and quarterback Cody Kirby. Youngstown State then scored on a 11-yard run by Scott and an 11-yard run by quarterback Dailyn Campbell.
Youngstown State threw just two passes in the first half and finished with 268 rushing yards and 131 passing yards.
