Letter: Don't vandalize opposing views, voice your own
Issue date: 10/14/08 Section: Opinion
The vandalism of the Bears For Life's display is absolutely horrendous. A recent letter, written to The Standard, claims that they "shouldn't have been surprised." It also states that the statistics provided at the pro-life display were blatantly false, but I, being the curious college student that I am, wonder if the "genius" who made this claim bothered to look up the facts to see whether or not they are actually false. Also, this person claims that the group was "lurking around the whole night with a camera phone, trying to catch people messing with their stuff." Although, due to my recent conversation with one of the supposed "lurkers," they at that time were heading to a member's apartment to watch a movie when they came across the incident so of course they documented it for proof. That's the American thing to do, because every American knows that in this country you will get nowhere without proof.
This person also claimed due to some "investigating" on his part, that the Bears For Life group only had the space reserved until 10 p.m. Now this is a valid argument, but it does not explain why it was that they were caught vandalizing the display at 8 p.m., nor does it explain why they so blatantly vandalized it. If it was their concern that the display was there after its time then they should have disposed of it. When they vandalized it and left it, they didn't do it because it shouldn't still be there, they did it for the Bears For Life group to see, otherwise they wouldn't have left the vandalism so blatantly obvious.
So here is the REAL "moral of the story, kids:" Vandalism is bad. Under no circumstances is it OK. If you have an opinion different than that of another, voice it, don't lower yourself to vandalism. How do you expect to bring people to your beliefs if you resort to childish ways to get your point across?

Regarding the events that led to this letters forming:
The "attack" on the Bears for Life display was in no way beneficial to anyone, but was it specifically an attack on Bears for Life or was it something different?
I, being an aniconist to some degree, see this as an attack on Christianity, not on the Bears for Life organization. (Continued…)

The American Way...
The Majority of Americans are pro-choice and support legal, safe, access to abortion.
Apparently, according to this author, the best way to bring people to your beliefs is to lie. (Continued…)
