Cynthia McKinney, Missouri's Green Party presidential nominee, has officially been certified to be a write-in candidate for the upcoming Nov. 4 election.

McKinney represents one of the four third-party Presidential nominees, including Bob Barr for the Libertarian party, Chuck Baldwin for the Constitution party and Ralph Nader, who is running as an Independent. All four will be placed on a majority of ballots throughout the United States.

If elected, McKinney, along with her vice president, Rosa Clemente, plans to end U.S. military activity in Iraq and Afghanistan and execute a not-for-profit healthcare system.

"I am proud to be able to write in Cynthia McKinney for President on my ballot this year," said Midge Potts, state co-chair of the progressive party of Missouri. "Missourians are demanding real change in the American political system."

Potts, a write-in candidate for U.S. Representative in the seventh Congressional district, said McKinney is known for being a maverick.

As a U.S. House Representative, McKinney filed articles of impeachment in 2006 against President George W. Bush stating that he was guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors and did not uphold the oath of presidential office.

With a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy, McKinney began her political career in 1988 when she was elected into Georgia's House of Representatives. She and her father, State Rep. Bill McKinney, were the first father-daughter pair to work together in the Georgia House.

According to www.votertruth.com, she was then elected in 1992 as the first African-American congresswoman from Georgia where she served until 2002 and was re-elected in 2004.

During her six terms in office, she served actively in the Congressional Black Caucus, the Progressive Caucus, Tri-Caucus and the Hispanic Caucus, according to www.votetruth08.com.

The Web site also stated she has worked with Hurricane Katrina victims, speaking out against the government's lack of sufficient reaction, and launched a bill to develop a clean-up program to cope with the horrific aftermath, along with several other bills.

"If I knew more about (McKinney), where she stood and what her party represented, I would be more inclined to vote for her," said Kacey Killion, a senior finance major. However, Killion said finding out about a candidate so late in the election season would deter her from researching that candidate.
