Starting Jan. 1, students and part-time workers will be paid twice a month for their on-campus job rather than monthly, according to a memo to Missouri State faculty and staff.

"We thought it would be in the interest of students to have a more consistent pay schedule," said Nathan Betz, senior systems analyst for Missouri State. "Now we can tell you that your pay period is from the beginning of the month to the middle of the month."

Students won't have to wonder whether their pay cycle will be three or four weeks, and they will be able to manage their money without looking at calendars, he said.

Betz said students will begin entering time via the new system on Dec. 1. The first pay period will be a full month, Dec. 1 through Dec. 31, because of the transition, and students will get paid for December on Jan. 15.

Mary Barb, Missouri State's assistant director of student employment services, said in an e-mail that online time entry will replace clocking in and out with ZipCards or manually filling out timecards next semester. All student employees and "part-time nonexempt employees," who work part time on campus, but are not students, will enter time and request leave online.

"Students workers will enter their time on the Web from any computer that has Web capability," she said.

The university has considered a semi-monthly pay schedule for awhile, Barb said, but that wasn't possible under the old payroll system. The Banner system will allow this to happen.

She said everyone who approves time for students and other part-time employees will go through training to learn how to use the new system.

"The decision (to change student payroll) was made because of the implementation of the SunGard Banner system," said Ken McClure, interim vice president for administrative and information services. "We're having to make several changes on campus."

The Banner Unified Digital Campus system is a software suite that helps administrators of universities conduct business with students, employees and other involved parties, according to SunGard Higher Education's Web site.

Planning for the implementation of Banner began in 2006, and the human resources and payroll aspect of the system will be operational on Jan. 1, McClure said.
