With the last season of Director of Athletics Bill Rowe's tenure now underway, so is the search for his replacement.

"I've received calls from around the country from individuals asking for advice," Rowe said. "I gave them some details about the position, but I've asked them to go through the proper channels for the rest of the process."

Rowe said that he wants to stay out of the search process as much as possible.

"While I will be glad to help with the search once it gets down toward the end, I want to stay out of the process as much as I can. I want this person to be chosen by the committee, not with my imposition."

According to Brent Dunn, the chairman of the director of athletics search committee, Missouri State has received a "great response of applicants, in the ballpark of 100 very qualified applicants from all over the nation."

Even though the committee is still meeting and reviewing files, they do have a makeshift gauge they are using to evaluate the candidates.

"We want an A.D. that comes into the job with good quality and who wants to be at Missouri State," Dunn said. "Someone who has knowledge in hiring strong coaches, finance, budgeting, external affairs, NCAA rules and more.

"Basically, we want someone with a wide array of knowledge; someone that understands this community, understands the Missouri Valley Conference, and honestly, wants to be a Bear."

The A.D. search committee is still meeting and reviewing files, but they are looking to narrow the list of applicants down to about 20-25 candidates over the next month or so.

From there, the committee will select a small handful of applicants from that list to come to the Missouri State campus for a formal interview toward the end of April.

After the formal interview process is over, all the essential parties will get together and make a decision on the next athletic director at Missouri State.

Their final announcement should come at the end of May and the new A.D. will then most likely take over their post starting on July 1.

As for Rowe, though, he's not taking his victory lap just yet. He made it clear that there are still about five months left for him in his position.

"We are still in the process of getting this basketball team to end the season on a good note," Rowe said. "We just had the fundraiser for Nolan Keane the other night (Keane was the baseball Bears' starting right fielder for the last three years and has been undergoing treatment for cancer since December), and we have the Hall of Fame induction weekend coming up this weekend.

Rowe announced in September that he would be retiring in June.
