Our View: Stay safe over spring break

As we all prepare for our spring break, whether it be here in Springfield or abroad, we urge the campus community to be aware of the potential dangers you might face while forgetting about responsibilities for a week.
The 18-to-24 age group is the most likely to contract sexually transmitted diseases, and spring break is a popular week to hook up, perhaps with multiple partners from different locations around the world.
Something as simple as a condom can prevent any unnecessary diseases or infections.
But that could be the least of your worries compared to the other mishaps spring breakers are notorious for.
Binge drinking is just as likely to occur right here at home as it will be in Panama City. While it is great to be able to kick back, relax and stay up late partying with friends, the danger of alcohol poisoning is very real.
Drinking can also lead to rape, arrests or fighting that could result in serious injury or death. All of which would be sure to ruin any spring break fun.
We also shouldn't forget cases like Natalee Holloway's, who disappeared in Aruba nearly four years ago and now is presumed dead.
Keeping in mind that terrible things happen to people every day, not just during spring break, might provide you with the caution and critical thinking that could save your life in certain situations.
Now, have a fun, and safe, spring break.
