The Bears are coming out swinging this fall in preparation for the loaded conference schedule they will be presented with.
The softball team has had the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season with games against local teams like Drury and Evangel. They have been taking advantage of this opportunity by putting up 19 runs in their first two games against Drury and Coffeyville C.C.
"We are on the field five days a week," head coach Holly Hesse said. "One day a week is our competitive day (Saturday), one day a week we do classroom things, working on leadership and teamwork and things like that."
Hesse and the Bears will be returning many key players, including all three pitchers from last year, while welcoming in six new players.
"Jenna Schwark is a junior and she is our most proven and one of our most talented returning players," said Hesse.
The six new players consist of five freshmen and one junior college transfer.
"All of them bring with them a lot of talent," said Hesse. "All of them could contribute significantly in their first year."
If you have walked by the on-campus softball field you may have seen the team practicing.
The old field is being used because improvements are currently being made to Killian Stadium.
"The construction company literally got done March 1 and we started playing on it March 5," said Hesse.
Since the season was starting, some aspects of the stadium were left unfinished or are in need of some sort of upgrade.
"In the future we will be out at Killian in the fall." said Hesse. "It is important to get these upgrades taken care of before spring."
When the spring finally does roll around, the Bears will have the opportunity to take on their conference foes that make up the consistently strong Missouri Valley Conference
The Bears play Evangel, Jefferson College, Central Missouri, and Crowder College in the upcoming weeks of the fall softball season.
